Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Gungurru - Eucalyptus caesia
Gungurru is a small weeping eucalypt from the granite outcrops of the Western Australian wheatbelt, and everything about it is ornamental rather than utilitarian. Eucalyptus caesia carries curling reddish minni ritchi bark, powdery white new stems, and pendulous branches hung with silver dusted buds that open to pink red brushes through winter and spring. It is chosen where a garden needs a light, see through, sculptural tree rather than a solid canopy.
Why Gungurru
Winter flowering: Pink to red flowers appear from mid winter into spring, when very little else in an Australian garden is in bloom.
Minni ritchi bark: Curling coppery strips peel back off the trunk to reveal fresh green beneath, a year round feature.
Silver bloom: Buds, young stems and fruit carry a white waxy coating that reads as silver against the red bark.
Weeping habit: Slender pendulous branchlets move constantly and cast a light, dappled shade rather than deep shadow.
Nectar source: Winter flowers pull in honeyeaters at the leanest time of year.
Ideal Applications
Waterwise feature tree: A single specimen in gravel mulch is the classic use in Perth, Adelaide and dry inland gardens.
Courtyard scale eucalypt: Small enough and light enough in canopy to sit near a house where larger gums cannot.
Native cottage planting: Combines with kangaroo paw, grevillea and eremophila in a low water bed.
Rock and outcrop gardens: Its natural home is granite, so it looks right planted among boulders and sharp gravel.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for an informal group; it is too open to make a true screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in Mediterranean climates so winter rain establishes it; early spring in frost prone districts
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is non negotiable; sandy, gravelly or decomposed granite soils suit it, and it is short lived in humid, heavy or summer wet ground
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer and then almost not at all, since summer irrigation shortens its life. Stake lightly against wind while the root plate forms, because the weeping crown can rock a young tree loose in sandy soil.
