Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping Bottlebrush - Melaleuca viminalis
Long the default choice for a hardy flowering native, Melaleuca viminalis (still widely sold as Callistemon viminalis) hangs its branches in soft weeping curtains and covers itself in crimson bottlebrush flowers in spring, usually with a second flush in autumn. It earns its place in Australian gardens on tolerance: it accepts wet ground, dry ground, moderate frost and coastal wind, and it flowers heavily while doing so.
Why Weeping Bottlebrush
Flowering weight: Mature trees can be smothered in crimson brushes, with the display lasting several weeks.
Weeping silhouette: Pendulous branchlets give a soft, moving outline that suits informal and native gardens.
Wet and dry tolerance: It grows naturally along watercourses and copes with both seasonal flooding and extended dry.
Wildlife draw: Nectar-rich flowers bring honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees in numbers.
Pruning response: It reshoots reliably from old wood, so it can be lifted into a small tree or held down as a large shrub.
Ideal Applications
Small garden shade tree: Its modest final size suits suburban blocks where a eucalypt would be far too large.
Creek and drainage line planting: A natural fit for wet-footed positions and stormwater swales.
Informal screen: Planted in a row and lightly trimmed for a dense flowering boundary.
Habitat and revegetation planting: Widely used on acreage for bird habitat and erosion control on creek banks.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring across most of Australia; avoid mid-summer planting inland
Soil & Drainage: Grows in almost any soil from sand to clay, including ground that is wet for part of the year. Best flowering comes in full sun on soil that holds some moisture.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week for the first two months, then weekly through the first summer. Mulch to 75mm keeping clear of the trunk, avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, and prune immediately after flowering if you want to build density.
