Blue Mallee - Eucalyptus polybractea
Blue Mallee is the species Australia's eucalyptus oil industry is built on, grown commercially around Inglewood in Victoria and West Wyalong in New South Wales for its exceptionally high cineole content. Eucalyptus polybractea forms a multi stemmed mallee from a woody lignotuber, sending up a cluster of slender trunks clothed in narrow, intensely blue grey aromatic leaves. In a garden setting it delivers strong silver blue colour at shrub scale with almost no water requirement, and it can be cut hard and will simply reshoot.
Why Blue Mallee
Silver Blue Foliage: The narrow glaucous leaves give one of the strongest blue tones available in an Australian native, holding colour year round.
Lignotuber Regrowth: It coppices readily, so it can be cut to the ground and will regenerate a fresh dense clump of juvenile blue stems.
High Oil Content: The foliage is aromatic and is the commercial source of Australian eucalyptus oil.
Multi Stemmed Habit: Several slim trunks rather than one thick one keep it in scale with a garden and give a sculptural base.
Extreme Drought and Frost Hardiness: Adapted to semi arid inland country, it handles heat, dry and hard frost without irrigation.
Ideal Applications
Waterwise Screen: A row of mallees gives an informal three to five metre screen on unirrigated ground.
Coppiced Foliage Plant: Cut back every two to three years it maintains a compact mound of vivid blue juvenile growth for cutting.
Dry Inland Garden: Suits the Wimmera, Mallee, central Victoria, inland New South Wales and the drier South Australian districts.
Farm Oil and Shelter Planting: Grown in rows for oil harvest while doubling as low windbreak on light soils.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, timed to seasonal rainfall in inland districts.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy, gravelly or loamy soils, including shallow and low fertility profiles. It tolerates mildly alkaline ground but not sustained waterlogging, and needs no fertiliser.
Establishment Care: A deep soak every two weeks through the first summer is sufficient, after which irrigation can stop entirely. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark clear of the stems, and if a denser clump is wanted, cut the plant back hard in late winter of its third year to force multiple new shoots from the lignotuber.
