Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Fiddle Leaf Fig (Multi-Stem) - Ficus lyrata
Grown as a multi stem, Ficus lyrata is trained with three or more trunks rising from the base and branching low, so the huge violin shaped leaves start near ground level instead of being carried on a bare pole. That form is what makes it useful outdoors as a screening plant in frost free climates: it gives a solid wall of dark glossy foliage with real architectural presence, rather than a single stemmed shade tree. Each leaf can reach 400mm long, leathery and strongly veined, and the effect is deliberately bold.
Why Fiddle Leaf Fig
Multi Stem Structure: Several trunks from the base with low branching, giving screening cover from ground level up.
Leaf Scale: Very large, glossy, fiddle shaped leaves that create a bold, sculptural mass unlike any fine leaved screen.
Growth Speed: Establishes and thickens quickly in warm humid conditions, closing a gap in a season or two.
Shade Adaptability: Grows in bright filtered light as readily as in full sun once hardened, which suits narrow side gardens.
Root Vigour Caution: The root system is strong and searching, so keep it well clear of pipes, pools, paving and building footings.
Ideal Applications
Bold Leaf Screening: Planted in a row along a boundary in subtropical gardens for solid visual mass.
Courtyard Statement: A single multi stem in a large courtyard where the trunk structure is on show.
Large Container Planting: Grown in an oversized planter on a sheltered terrace, where root run is contained.
Tropical Design Schemes: Combined with palms and philodendrons as the broad leaved backdrop layer.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, in frost free areas only
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free draining soil kept evenly moist, with generous organic matter, and shelter from cold drying wind which browns the leaf margins
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first warm season, keeping moisture steady since large leaves lose water fast. Mulch heavily, feed in spring and midsummer, and site the plant at least several metres from services, paving and pool shells to allow for root spread.
