Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ficus umbellata
Think of Ficus umbellata as the softer relative of the fiddle leaf fig: the same bold scale but with broad, thin, heart-shaped leaves held almost horizontally, like a series of green umbrellas stacked up a pale slender trunk. It is a tropical West and Central African fig that has become popular for interiors and warm, sheltered courtyards because the leaf shape reads as generous and light rather than heavy. In frost-free ground with warmth and humidity it will keep going and become a small tree.
Why Ficus umbellata
Leaf Shape: Wide heart-shaped blades up to 30cm across give real presence from a young plant.
Light Structure: Thin leaves and a pale trunk keep it visually lighter than a fiddle leaf or rubber fig.
Fast Establishment: In warm conditions it puts on height quickly, closing a gap in a season.
Shade Adaptable: Bright filtered light suits it, which is why it performs indoors and in covered courtyards.
Root Vigour: Like all figs it develops a strong root system, so keep in-ground plantings well away from pipes, paving and footings.
Ideal Applications
Sheltered Courtyard Tree: A warm, wind-free enclosed space suits it better than an open exposed garden.
Atrium and Covered Terrace: Its tolerance of bright indirect light makes it a strong subject under a roof or skylight.
Large Feature Pot: Container growing restrains the roots and keeps it at a manageable indoor or terrace scale.
Tropical Garden Layering: Sits between palms and understorey planting in a warm-climate scheme.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2-3m for a grouped screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5-6m in the ground, well clear of structures
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. It wants consistent moisture but will not tolerate a waterlogged root zone or any frost.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first warm season and keep humidity up where you can, since dry air and hot wind cause leaf edge burn and drop. Mulch thickly clear of the trunk, feed monthly through the growing season, and protect it from cold snaps and from harsh unfiltered afternoon sun outside the wet tropics.
