Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mediopicta Mauritius Hemp - Furcraea foetida ‘Mediopicta’
A large architectural rosette, Furcraea foetida ‘Mediopicta’ carries broad sword shaped leaves striped creamy yellow through the centre with green margins, arching outward in a loose fountain. Unlike agaves it has no vicious marginal spines, so it can be used beside a path without hazard. It is planted for structure and brightness in dry gardens, where the pale variegation lifts a planting of grey and green succulents.
Why Mediopicta
Central Variegation: Wide cream to pale yellow banding down each leaf keeps the plant luminous year round.
Spineless Margins: Safe to use near paths, seating and pool edges where agaves are not.
Architectural Form: A symmetrical fountain shaped rosette gives strong sculptural line.
Very Low Water: Thrives on rainfall alone in coastal and warm temperate Australia once established.
Coastal Hardiness: Salt wind and sandy soils suit it, making it useful on exposed seaside blocks.
Ideal Applications
Dry Garden Focal Point: A single rosette anchors a gravel bed of aloes, echeverias and grasses.
Large Container Specimen: Grown in a wide pot on a terrace where the rosette shape is displayed.
Coastal Landscaping: Handles salt laden wind and reflected heat on beachside properties.
Resort Style Poolside: Provides a tropical looking form that needs almost no irrigation or litter clean up.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Very free draining sandy or gravelly soil, raised beds on clay, no winter wet
Establishment Care: Water only every ten to fourteen days for the first few months and stop once new leaf growth appears. Use a gravel mulch rather than bark to keep the crown dry, and protect from frost, which damages the foliage below about minus 2 degrees.
