Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Burgundy Tea Tree - Leptospermum ‘Burgundy’
This is a coloured foliage tea tree, grown as much for its deep bronze burgundy leaves as for the flowers it carries in spring. The fine, closely set foliage holds its dark tone all year and deepens further through cold weather, giving a permanent contrast plant in a native border. It suits gardeners who want the toughness and low water demand of a Leptospermum without the plain green look of the species.
Why Burgundy Tea Tree
Year round leaf colour: Deep burgundy to bronze foliage that intensifies in winter rather than fading.
Fine dense texture: Small tightly packed leaves make a solid, neat mass that clips well into a soft informal shape.
Spring flowers: Small pink to rose red blooms sit against the dark foliage for several weeks in spring.
Low water requirement: Once established it needs little to no supplementary irrigation in most southern Australian gardens.
Pollinator value: Tea tree flowers are heavily worked by native bees and hoverflies.
Ideal Applications
Contrast planting: Set against silver westringia or lime green coastal rosemary for a strong tonal composition.
Low informal hedge: Planted in a run it makes a soft dark hedge of around 1.5m with light annual clipping.
Waterwise border: A structural filler in gravel mulched beds with kangaroo paw, grevillea and dianella.
Coastal garden: Handles wind and salt influence better than most coloured foliage exotics.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly loam; tea trees are prone to root rot in heavy, wet or poorly aerated soil
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer, applying water to the soil rather than the foliage, then reduce sharply. Prune lightly immediately after flowering, cutting only into leafy wood, because tea trees will not reshoot reliably from bare old timber.
