Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Black Tulip Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’
‘Black Tulip’ produces the darkest flower of any commonly grown deciduous Magnolia, a deep wine burgundy that reads almost black in bud and in low light. The blooms are goblet shaped with thick, waxy tepals that hold their form for far longer than the thin petalled magnolias, and they open on bare wood in late winter before any leaf appears. Its narrow upright habit is the other reason designers use it: it delivers a full magnolia display in a footprint of under three metres.
Why Black Tulip Magnolia
Flower colour: Deep burgundy, close to black in bud, unmatched by the pink and white deciduous magnolias.
Substantial tepals: Thick waxy petals resist bruising and hold their shape well, so the display lasts.
Bare wood display: Flowers open before the leaves, so the whole framework of the tree carries colour at once.
Narrow habit: The upright form fits courtyards and narrow beds where a spreading magnolia could not go.
Cool climate performer: It flowers reliably in Melbourne, Adelaide Hills, Canberra, Tasmania and the Southern Highlands.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard specimen: A single tree in a small paved space becomes the entire focus for six weeks in late winter.
Narrow avenue: The columnar shape allows repetition along a drive or path without crowding.
Underplanted feature: Set above hellebores, snowdrops or dark leafed groundcover, the flower colour is amplified.
Large containers: Its restrained growth rate suits a substantial pot on a terrace or entry landing.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil, slightly acidic. It dislikes alkaline ground, compaction and drying out, and the fleshy roots resent disturbance once planted.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers, since the shallow fleshy root system dries out quickly in hot weather. Mulch generously with compost and leaf litter but keep it off the trunk, avoid digging or cultivating within the root zone, and site the tree with shelter from strong wind and hot early morning sun, which can mark opening blooms after a frost.
