Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Mountain Pine - Pinus mugo
Pinus mugo is the shrubby alpine pine of the European mountains, growing as a dense low mound of dark green needles rather than a tree, and it is used in Australian gardens where a conifer is wanted at knee to waist height. It is exceptionally tough, built for thin soils, exposed sites, snow and hard frost, and it holds colour through winter when perennials have retreated. Growth is slow enough that a well-placed plant stays in scale for a very long time.
Why the Dwarf Mountain Pine
Mounding Habit: Forms a dense rounded cushion with no leader to remove or control.
Alpine Toughness: Handles exposure, frost, snow and poor stony soil without protection.
Winter Structure: Keeps solid dark green form through the cold months.
Slow Growth: Remains in proportion for many years in a small bed or rockery.
Textural Contrast: The stiff needle mass reads strongly against grasses, gravel and stone.
Ideal Applications
Rockery Planting: The classic conifer for a stone and gravel rock garden.
Low Border Structure: Anchors the front of a mixed cool climate bed year round.
Alpine Style Garden: Combines with dwarf conifers, sedums and alpine perennials in highland gardens.
Container Conifer: Excellent long-term subject for a trough or wide pot.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.5m for a continuous low mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil of low to moderate fertility; tolerates sandy, stony and alkaline ground but not wet feet
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only in extended dry weather, as this pine dislikes rich, constantly moist soil. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark and prune only by pinching the soft candles in spring if a tighter shape is wanted.
