Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping Lace Lady Robinia (Standard) - Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Lace Lady’
‘Lace Lady’, also sold as Twisty Baby, is the contorted dwarf form of the black locust, and grafted onto a clear stem it makes a small weeping tree of twisting stems and curled bright green leaflets. Robinia pseudoacacia in this form is grown for its winter silhouette as much as its summer foliage: bare, the corkscrewed branch structure is genuinely sculptural. It stays small enough for a courtyard while still reading as a proper tree.
Why Lace Lady Robinia
Contorted Branching: Every stem twists and curls, giving a distinctive winter structure that no straight branched tree offers.
Curled Foliage: The compound leaves are twisted and lace like, an unusual texture at close range.
Small Scale: A fraction of the size of the species, so it can sit near paving and buildings.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns a clean butter yellow before dropping.
Hardy and Adaptable: Copes with poor soil, dry conditions, wind and frost better than most ornamental small trees.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Feature Tree: A single specimen carries a small paved space through all four seasons.
Formal Entry Pair: Matched standards either side of an entrance give an unusual, sculptural symmetry.
Container Planting: The compact root system and small crown suit large pots on terraces.
Small Garden Focal Point: Works where a full sized deciduous tree would overwhelm the space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In a repeated row allow 2 to 3m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m as separated standards
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, including poor and sandy soils, provided drainage is reasonable. Avoid permanently wet ground.
Establishment Care: Water regularly through the first two summers, then reduce as the tree is naturally drought tolerant. Stake the standard until the stem is self supporting, as the wood is brittle in wind, and remove any suckers or shoots from the rootstock and clear trunk promptly, since the vigorous understock will overtake the graft if left alone.
