Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia reginae
A clump of this in flower is unmistakable, and it does the job on a fraction of the water most tropical looking plants demand. Strelitzia reginae builds a fan of stiff grey green paddle leaves on long stalks, then pushes up beaked bracts that release a sequence of orange sepals and vivid blue petals, mostly through the cooler half of the year when little else is performing. It holds its shape without staking or clipping, which is why it appears so often in commercial and coastal plantings.
Why Bird of Paradise
Winter Flowering: The main flush runs from autumn through to spring, filling the season when tropical gardens go quiet.
Flower Longevity: Each bract releases several flowers in succession, and cut stems hold for a fortnight in a vase.
Architectural Foliage: Upright grey green paddles give a strong repeating form even out of flower.
Coastal Toughness: Handles salt laden wind and sandy soils that flatten softer tropical foliage.
Water Thrift: Thick fleshy roots store moisture, so an established clump copes with dry spells far better than its looks suggest.
Ideal Applications
Mass Planting: Blocks of five or more along a driveway or path for a strong repeated form.
Coastal Gardens: Front line planting where salt wind rules out most flowering perennials.
Large Containers: Performs well and flowers freely in a big pot on a terrace or balcony.
Understorey To Palms: Fills the bare ground beneath palms and frangipani with structure and colour.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a solid mass planted band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m for individual clumps
Best Planting Season: Spring through autumn, when soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil enriched with compost. Tolerates sand and light clay, but not sustained waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first warm season to settle the fleshy roots, then reduce to occasional deep soaks. Feed in early spring and again in late summer, mulch to 50mm, and resist dividing the clump, since plants flower best when the crowns are left undisturbed and slightly crowded.
