Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Smaragd Arborvitae - Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’
Smaragd is the narrow emerald arborvitae that holds its colour through winter instead of bronzing off, which is why it has become the default clipped column in Australian formal gardens. Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’ grows as a tight self supporting cone with dense flat sprays of foliage, so a row can be planted as a screen and left almost unpruned. It is a cool to warm temperate plant that wants steady soil moisture and shelter from hot dry wind.
Why Smaragd Arborvitae
Winter colour: It stays bright green through frost while most arborvitae cultivars turn dull bronze.
Narrow footprint: Barely over a metre wide at maturity, so it screens along fence lines and narrow side passages.
Naturally dense: The habit is tight enough that shearing is optional rather than essential.
Uniform clone: Every plant matches, which matters when twenty of them stand in a row.
Soft and safe: Foliage has no prickle, so it can brush a path, a pool fence or a play area without complaint.
Ideal Applications
Narrow boundary screen: A single row lifts privacy above a 1.8m fence without stealing garden width.
Formal entry columns: Paired either side of a door or gate for vertical emphasis.
Pool surrounds: Non invasive roots and minimal leaf litter make it one of the safer conifers near water.
Planters and pots: Holds shape and scale in a large container for many years.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.9m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; avoid establishing through peak summer
Soil & Drainage: Moist but free draining loam, neutral to slightly alkaline; it fails both in drought stressed sand and in waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Run drip irrigation along the row and keep soil consistently damp for the first two years, since a single hard dry out leaves permanent brown patches. Mulch 75mm deep along the whole line and shear only the current season's growth, because it will not reshoot from bare old wood.
