Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Century Plant - Agave americana
Agave americana is the big blue grey agave that anchors dry gardens across southern Australia: leaves well over a metre long, recurving outward, edged with hooked spines and finished with a hard dagger point. It asks for nothing beyond sun and drainage and it holds its shape through drought, salt wind and neglect. The armament is real though, and where it goes in the garden matters as much as whether it goes in at all.
Why Century Plant
Blue Grey Architecture: The colour and the hard geometric rosette read strongly against render, stone and gravel.
Severe Drought Tolerance: Established plants survive entire dry summers with no irrigation at all.
Coastal Hardiness: Salt laden wind and sandy soil suit it, where softer feature plants burn and thin.
Frost Tolerance: More cold hardy than most large succulents, which extends its range well inland.
Monocarpic Life Cycle: After a decade or more it throws a flowering mast several metres high, sets seed and dies, leaving a ring of offsets behind.
Ideal Applications
Dry Gravel Garden: The defining plant of a waterwise scheme built around stone, gravel and succulents.
Coastal Cliff and Verge: Holds exposed, poor, salty positions that will not support much else.
Set Back Architectural Bed: Best positioned behind a low wall or a metre of gravel, away from foot traffic.
Dry Erosion Prone Banks: The heavy fibrous root system binds loose slopes in low rainfall districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m when mass planted
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy, gravelly or rocky ground; poor soil is fine, but wet heavy clay will rot the crown
Establishment Care: Water monthly through the first summer only, then leave it entirely to rainfall. Site it at least a metre back from paths, driveways, play areas and pool surrounds because the terminal spines can cause deep puncture wounds and the sap irritates skin. Remove basal pups as they appear, and avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves, as this species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia.
