Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Divine Plum Giant Bromeliad - Alcantarea imperialis ‘Divine Plum’
A single mature rosette of Alcantarea imperialis ‘Divine Plum’ works like a piece of sculpture, a symmetrical wheel of broad, arching leaves in a smoky wine purple that holds its shape without pruning, staking or seasonal collapse. This is a plant grown for architecture and colour rather than flowers, though a well grown specimen will eventually throw a towering branched spike. It suits the same brief as an agave but without the spines, and it takes far more shade.
Why Divine Plum
Leaf Colour: Broad strap leaves carry a deep plum to burgundy purple with a soft grey bloom, strongest where light levels are high.
Scale: Mature rosettes reach well over a metre across, giving a large focal form from a single plant.
Drought Endurance: The central cup stores water and the fleshy leaves buffer dry spells, so it survives long gaps between waterings.
Low Maintenance: No pruning, no deadheading, no leaf drop, just the occasional removal of a spent outer leaf.
Container Performance: Its shallow root system and slow growth make it one of the better long term pot subjects for a large planter.
Ideal Applications
Entry Statement: A matched pair either side of a doorway or gate, planted in oversized pots.
Rockery and Gravel Garden: Set among boulders where the sharp drainage suits it and the rosette form reads clearly.
Tropical Understorey: Planted beneath palms and frangipani where filtered light and leaf litter mimic its natural conditions.
Poolside Planting: Spineless, tidy and unbothered by reflected heat, with no messy leaf fall into the water.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a mass planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Extremely free draining and gritty, with added coarse sand, scoria or bark, and never a site that holds water around the base
Establishment Care: Fill the central cup and water the soil lightly every week or two through the first warm season, letting the mix dry between waterings. Protect from frost and from prolonged winter wet, and site it out of the harshest inland afternoon sun until the leaves have hardened.
