Overview & Specifications

African Milk Tree - Euphorbia trigona
Euphorbia trigona grows as a candelabra of upright, three-sided green stems, each ridge lined with paired thorns and small teardrop leaves that come and go with the seasons. It is a succulent, not a cactus, and it behaves like one: almost no water, sharp drainage and heat are all it asks. Designers use it where a strong vertical is needed in a dry courtyard or gravel garden and where a plant must survive long gaps between maintenance visits. The milky sap is a skin and eye irritant, so it should be sited away from play areas and handled with gloves when pruned.
Why the African Milk Tree
Candelabra form: Branches arise vertically from the main stems, building a strongly geometric column over time.
Ridged, patterned stems: The three-angled stems are marked with paler chevrons, giving detail at close range.
Very low water use: Established plants need almost nothing beyond occasional rain in a well drained position.
Heat and reflected glare: Unfazed by hot paving, north-facing walls and full summer sun in the drier states.
Easy to propagate and reshape: Stems can be cut and rerooted, so height and spread are easily controlled.
Ideal Applications
Dry courtyard feature: A single specimen in gravel against a rendered wall gives a strong architectural line.
Succulent and cactus collections: Provides the vertical element among low-growing agaves and aloes.
Large containers: Ideal in a heavy pot where drainage is controlled and it can be moved out of winter rain.
Sheltered indoor light wells: Performs in very bright interior positions with minimal watering.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m for a grouped stand; it is not a screening plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Coarse sandy or gritty free draining mix; winter wet and cold combined will rot the base
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, roughly every two to three weeks in the first warm season, and not at all through cold wet weather. Mulch with gravel rather than organic material, keep the base dry, and provide a discreet stake for tall single stems until the root plate anchors.
