Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Birds Nest Fern - Asplenium nidus
The rosette is the whole point: broad glossy undivided fronds radiate from a central crown that collects leaf litter and water in the wild, forming the nest that gives the plant its name. Asplenium nidus grows naturally as an epiphyte on rainforest trees, which explains what it wants in the garden, namely shade, humidity, air movement and drainage rather than rich wet soil. In a shaded Australian courtyard it supplies solid green mass at a scale that smaller ferns cannot reach.
Why Birds Nest Fern
Bold Undivided Fronds: Broad glossy leaves give a clean sculptural form quite unlike the lacy texture of most ferns.
Deep Shade Performance: It thrives in positions too dark for flowering plants, including narrow side passages and under decks.
Substantial Scale: A mature plant reaches over a metre across, filling a bed rather than dotting it.
Epiphytic Habit: It can be mounted on a tree fork or log as well as planted in the ground.
Low Maintenance: Beyond removing the occasional old brown frond, it asks for nothing but moisture and shelter.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Courtyards: Massed against a wall it turns a dark unusable corner into a green room.
Tropical Understorey: Planted beneath palms and tree ferns it fills the ground layer with broad glossy foliage.
Mounted Feature: Attached to a tree fork or timber post it recreates its natural epiphytic position.
Covered Entries and Atriums: Sheltered, bright but sunless spots suit it precisely.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a continuous understorey
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m for individual specimens
Best Planting Season: Spring through autumn in warm districts; avoid planting into cold wet soil
Soil & Drainage: Open, humus rich, free draining mix with plenty of coarse organic matter; heavy soil that holds water will rot the crown
Establishment Care: Keep the soil consistently moist but never saturated through the first year, watering at the base rather than repeatedly filling the crown in cool weather. Mulch with leaf litter or fine composted bark, shelter it from hot dry wind and direct sun, and protect it from frost, which scorches the fronds.
