Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Collette Finger Lime - Citrus australasica ‘Collette’
Finger lime is one of the few Australian bush foods to have crossed fully into commercial kitchens, and Citrus australasica ‘Collette’ is a named selection grown for consistent cropping rather than seedling variability. The plant itself is a thorny, fine-leaved rainforest citrus that clips into a neat upright form, so it earns its place as an ornamental hedge or courtyard tree even in seasons when the fruit is not the point.
Why Collette Finger Lime
Caviar fruit: The slender cylindrical fruit split to release crisp juice vesicles that burst rather than smear, which is why chefs pay a premium for them.
Named selection: Propagated vegetatively, so cropping and fruit character are far more predictable than seedling-grown finger limes.
Fine texture: Tiny glossy leaves on dense thorny stems give a much finer look than any other citrus.
Australian native: A genuine rainforest species from the subtropical east coast, well adapted to humid summers.
Security value: The stems are seriously thorny, which makes a boundary planting effective as well as productive.
Ideal Applications
Edible hedge: Planted in a row along a boundary for a productive, impenetrable screen to around two metres.
Bush food garden: Combined with lemon myrtle, davidson plum and native ginger in a themed productive bed.
Courtyard container: Its modest root system and slow habit suit a large pot near a kitchen door.
Understorey planting: Grown in filtered light beneath larger trees, echoing its natural rainforest position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn; avoid planting into cold wet soil in winter
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free-draining, slightly acidic soil high in organic matter. It resents waterlogging and will not tolerate salty or highly alkaline ground.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, watering deeply twice a week in hot weather. Mulch well but keep mulch clear of the trunk, feed with a citrus fertiliser in spring and again in late summer, and shelter young plants from harsh afternoon sun and frost.
