Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Manzanillo Olive - Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’
‘Manzanillo’ is the classic Spanish table olive and the most widely planted commercial variety in Australia, valued for large, rounded, thin-skinned fruit and heavy reliable crops. As a tree, Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’ has a lower, more spreading and open habit than upright varieties like ‘Frantoio’, which makes it easier to pick and gives a broader, more gnarled silhouette in the garden. It is a genuine dry-climate tree, at home in the Mediterranean conditions of southern Australia.
Why Manzanillo Olive
Fruit Quality: Large, plump, rounded fruit with a high flesh-to-stone ratio, the standard for green and black table olives.
Spreading Frame: A naturally lower, wider habit that develops a broad picturesque canopy and keeps fruit within reach.
Drought and Heat: Deep rooted and grey leaved, it holds condition through hot dry summers with minimal water.
Silver Foliage: The grey-green upper leaf and silver underside shimmer in wind and lighten dark garden corners.
Long Life: Olives are extremely long lived and improve in character as the trunk gnarls with age.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Small Grove: Rows or informal groups on a dry sunny slope for both fruit and Mediterranean character.
Courtyard Specimen: A single multi-branched tree in gravel or paving is a mainstay of Mediterranean and modern design.
Driveway Avenue: Evenly spaced trees give year-round silver structure without heavy leaf drop.
Windbreak in Dry Country: Tough enough to shelter a kitchen garden or house yard in low-rainfall districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding hard frost periods and midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil is essential; olives tolerate poor, rocky and alkaline ground but will decline in heavy soil that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week or two through the first two summers, then only during flowering and fruit set in dry years. Keep grass and weeds clear of the trunk, and open the centre of the canopy with a light winter prune so sunlight reaches the fruiting wood.
