Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Kumquat (Standard) - Citrus japonica
Of all the citrus, the kumquat is the one that was made to be a standard. Citrus japonica is naturally small, slow and densely twiggy, so a trained head stays compact without constant cutting, and it carries bright orange oval fruit through autumn and winter against small, deeply glossy leaves. It is also the hardiest citrus in the group, taking light frost that would damage a lemon, which puts a fruiting formal tree within reach of gardens well outside the citrus belt.
Why the Kumquat Standard
Long Fruit Display: Orange fruit colours in autumn and holds on the tree for months, so the head is decorative right through winter.
Edible Skin: The whole fruit is eaten, sweet rind and tart flesh together, or turned into marmalade and preserves.
Fragrant Flowers: Small white blooms in summer scent a courtyard strongly for their size.
Naturally Compact: Slow, dense growth means the trained ball needs far less shearing than most fruiting standards.
Cold Tolerance: The most frost-hardy of the common citrus once established, extending where a fruiting standard can be grown.
Ideal Applications
Formal Entry Pairs: Matched standards in pots or in ground flanking a door or gate.
Potager and Kitchen Gardens: Structure and height in a productive garden bed without shading the crops beneath.
Courtyard Containers: Ideal in a large pot, which also lets it be moved out of severe frost.
Path Rhythm: A repeated line down a path, evergreen year round and coloured through winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn; avoid cold wet soil in mid winter
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil with good organic content; citrus decline quickly in waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers, keeping moisture even to avoid fruit drop. Mulch generously but keep it well clear of the trunk to prevent collar rot, and feed with a citrus fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer.
