Bhutan Cypress - Cupressus torulosa
This is the upright Himalayan cypress, a fast, dense, dark green conifer that has been used for shelter belts and tall hedging across southern Australia for well over a century. Cupressus torulosa builds a narrow conical crown of fine, aromatic, scale like foliage, and it clips readily, which is what separates it from the ornamental weeping cypresses. On dry, exposed, frost prone ground it is one of the most dependable evergreen screens available.
Why the Bhutan Cypress
Dense fine foliage: Small scale like leaves pack tightly, giving a solid visual barrier rather than a filtered one.
Takes shearing: It responds well to regular clipping, so it can be held as a formal tall hedge as easily as grown as a tree.
Frost and drought hardiness: It handles hard frost and extended dry periods once established, unusual for a screening plant of this scale.
Rapid establishment: Growth is quick enough that a useful screen is achieved within a few seasons.
Aromatic timber and foliage: Crushed foliage carries the resinous cypress scent, and the wood is naturally durable.
Ideal Applications
Tall boundary hedge: Planted in a line and sheared annually it forms a solid green wall to four metres or more.
Rural shelter belt: A double staggered row filters wind across paddocks, orchards and homestead gardens.
Privacy screen: Where an overlooking neighbour needs blocking at height, it gets there faster than most alternatives.
Driveway avenue: Its narrow conical form suits a formal repeated planting along a long entrance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres for a clipped hedge, 2.5 to 3m for an informal screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m centres for an avenue, and well clear of buildings and services
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, avoiding waterlogged winter ground
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of any reasonable type, including rocky and alkaline ground. It will not tolerate persistent waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers to get the root plate away, then reduce, as an established cypress needs little irrigation. Mulch to 75mm along the whole hedge line, keep grass competition off the root zone for the first three years, and begin light tip pruning early so the hedge builds density from the base up rather than being cut back hard later.
