Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sacred Fig - Ficus religiosa
The Bodhi tree of Buddhist tradition, Ficus religiosa is instantly recognisable by its leaves: broad hearts drawn out into a long tapering drip tip, hung on slender stalks so the whole canopy trembles in air movement too slight to feel. It is a fast, wide spreading fig that builds a high domed crown and briefly drops its leaves in late winter before flushing coppery pink. It is a magnificent tree with a real constraint attached. The root system is powerful and far reaching, so this is a plant for parkland, large lawns and acreage, not for a suburban block with services and paving nearby.
Why Sacred Fig
Foliage Movement: The long stalked heart shaped leaves shimmer constantly, which is the tree's signature and the reason it is planted near meditation and seating areas.
Shade Quality: A high, broad, densely leafed crown that shades a very large footprint once established.
New Growth: The brief late winter leaf drop is followed by a flush of coppery bronze new leaves that lasts several weeks.
Growth Rate: Genuinely fast in warm climates, so the canopy arrives in years rather than decades.
Root Vigour: Roots travel widely and lift paving and block drains, so a generous setback from all built structures is essential.
Ideal Applications
Open Parkland: The right setting, with room for the crown and no infrastructure in the root zone.
Meditation and Temple Garden: Its cultural association and its moving canopy make it the traditional choice.
Acreage Shade Tree: A single tree shades a very large area of paddock or lawn.
Wide Civic Verges: Suitable only where the verge is deep, services are absent and there is room for the mature spread.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not suited to close screening rows. In a grouped planting, 10 to 12m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 15 to 20m, and no closer than 15m to buildings, paving, pools or underground services.
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer in warm districts.
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable, at its best in deep free draining loam. Drought tolerant once established but frost tender while young.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers to drive the root system down rather than out. Mulch broadly, and lift the canopy progressively over the first few years so the mature clearance under the crown is usable.
