Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mary MacKillop Bottlebrush - Callistemon ‘Mary MacKillop’
Callistemon ‘Mary MacKillop’ is a compact Australian bottlebrush selection bred to hold a dense, rounded shape without the leggy bare-legged habit that older callistemons develop. Deep red brushes appear over a long spring flush with a lighter repeat in autumn, on a shrub small enough to sit under a window line or in a narrow bed. It is chosen where a gardener wants callistemon toughness and bird traffic at half the scale of a weeping bottlebrush.
Why Mary MacKillop Bottlebrush
Compact habit: Naturally bushy to the ground, so it does not need hard renovation pruning to stay presentable.
Deep red brushes: Strong crimson flower brushes carried in quantity across the outside of the canopy.
Two flushes: A heavy spring display followed by a secondary autumn flowering in most districts.
Wet and dry tolerance: Like most callistemons it copes with periodically waterlogged ground as well as extended dry once established.
Frost hardy: Handles the light to moderate frosts of inland and tableland gardens.
Ideal Applications
Low informal hedge: Planted in a run it makes a 1.5m flowering hedge that needs one tidy-up a year after flowering.
Mass planting: Used in commercial and roadside beds where reliability matters more than novelty.
Bird garden: Feeds honeyeaters at eye level, close to paths and outdoor living areas.
Swale and drainage line planting: Suits the damp edges of rain gardens and detention basins that stay wet after storms.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring anywhere in Australia, with autumn preferred in hot summer districts
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to clay, loam and sand, tolerant of seasonal wet, though it flowers best in soil that drains freely between waterings
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first two months, then weekly through the first summer. Mulch to 75mm and tip prune lightly after the first flowering to set a dense branch framework.
