Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ruby Rubber Plant - Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’
Ficus elastica 'Ruby' carries the same thick, leathery, oval leaves as the plain rubber plant, but each one is marbled in cream and green with a broad rose pink margin, and new growth pushes out inside a vivid pink sheath. Grown outdoors in a frost free position it becomes a bold, chunky textured small tree; in a large pot it is a courtyard feature that reads from right across a space. Colour intensity depends directly on light received, so this is not a dark corner plant.
Why Ruby Rubber Plant
Variegation: Cream, green and rose pink in every leaf, with the strongest colour on new growth.
Leaf Substance: Thick, waxy leaves shrug off wind and dry air better than most variegated foliage plants.
Light Dependence: Bright conditions keep the pink saturated, while deep shade turns the plant plain green.
Container Performance: Happy to be pot bound, which keeps its size manageable.
Sap Note: Cut stems bleed a milky latex that irritates skin, so gloves are worth wearing when pruning.
Ideal Applications
Sheltered Courtyard: A warm, wind protected corner brings out the best colour outdoors.
Statement Container: One large pot beside an entry does the work of a whole garden bed.
Bright Interior Position: Performs indoors near a large window with plenty of natural light.
Subtropical Planting: Combines with cordylines, philodendrons and gingers in a foliage led scheme.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, in frost free positions only
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, organically rich soil, kept well away from pipes, pools and paving because rubber plant roots are vigorous
Establishment Care: Water when the top 50mm of soil dries, roughly weekly in summer and much less in winter. Shield the plant from hot afternoon sun and drying wind through its first season, which is when variegated leaves scorch most easily.
