Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cyclanthus bipartitus
Few plants read as unmistakably rainforest as Cyclanthus bipartitus. Each glossy leaf is split almost to the base into two long lobes, held on a strong upright stalk, so a mature clump looks like a cross between a palm and a giant aroid without being either. It belongs to its own small tropical American family, and in Australian gardens it is used where designers want a bold architectural clump in deep shade that will not go woody or leggy.
Why Cyclanthus bipartitus
Split leaf form: The deeply divided, forked leaves are unique in cultivation and photograph exceptionally well in low light.
Deep shade performance: Grows properly in genuine shade, not just bright indirect light, which very few large-leaved plants do.
Clumping, not spreading: Expands slowly from a short rhizome, so it stays where it is planted.
Evergreen structure: Holds full form all year in frost-free gardens, giving permanent presence at eye level.
Curious inflorescence: Produces an unusual spiralled spadix, more a talking point than a floral display.
Ideal Applications
Shaded tropical understorey: Planted beneath palms and large-leaved trees as the mid-storey layer.
Atriums and covered courtyards: Thrives in the sheltered humidity of enclosed spaces with overhead light.
Feature clump beside water: The high humidity of pond and cascade edges suits it, and the leaf shape reflects well.
Large interior planters: Suitable for well-lit interior positions in warm buildings where humidity is maintained.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, permanently moist, compost-heavy soil that still drains; it will not tolerate drying out
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone constantly damp for the first year, watering daily in hot weather. Mulch generously with leaf litter, maintain humidity by grouping with other foliage plants, and protect completely from frost and drying wind.
