Arctic Green Cypress - Cupressus torulosa ‘Arctic Green’
When a boundary needs real height quickly and the site is hot, exposed or dry, a Himalayan cypress does the work that softer screening plants cannot. Cupressus torulosa handles heat, drought, alkaline soil and frost, and this selected form is grown for dense, uniform, deep green foliage on a narrow upright frame. It is chosen over Leyland cypress in Australian conditions because it holds colour through dry summers instead of browning out from the inside.
Why Arctic Green Cypress
Fast Vertical Screening: A row closes into a solid wall of foliage in a few seasons, blocking sightlines that fencing cannot reach.
Drought Hardiness: Once established it carries through dry inland summers with little supplementary water.
Narrow Footprint: Growth stays comparatively upright, so it screens without pushing several metres into the garden.
Wide Soil Tolerance: Copes with poor, rocky and alkaline ground provided the drainage is genuine.
Cold Hardy: Frost across tableland and highland districts is taken in its stride once the tree is settled.
Ideal Applications
Tall Boundary Screen: The standard answer for blocking a two storey neighbour or an unwanted view.
Windbreak Row: Dense foliage from ground level up makes it effective as shelter on rural and semi rural blocks.
Driveway Avenue: Repeated columns give strong formal rhythm along a long entry.
Clipped Formal Hedge: Responds to light regular trimming into a flat faced hedge held at 4m to 6m.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; avoid planting into midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Any reasonably drained soil including sandy, rocky and limey ground; conifers of this type will not survive prolonged waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, then taper off as the root system extends. Mulch the root zone, stake only if the site is very windy, and remove the staking within twelve months so the trunk builds its own strength.
