Overview & Specifications

Giant Silver Plum Bromeliad - Alcantarea imperialis ‘Silver Plum’
Silver-grey above and plum-red beneath, the leaves of ‘Silver Plum’ give this giant bromeliad its name. Raised from Alcantarea imperialis, it builds a broad, symmetrical vase of thick, smooth-edged leaves dusted with a powdery bloom, and as they arch outward the dark undersides show along every curve. It is planted as a living sculpture in sunny, open ground or a heavy pot, and holds that form for many years before it flowers.
Why Giant Silver Plum Bromeliad
Two-Tone Leaf: A powdery silver bloom on the upper face and a plum-red underside give every leaf two colours, and the contrast sharpens in strong light.
Sun Hardy: Unlike most bromeliads it takes full sun once acclimatised, which keeps the rosette compact and the plum tone at its deepest.
Smooth Edges: The leaf margins carry no teeth, so it can be planted beside steps, seating and paths without the snagging of many bromeliads.
Water Held in the Cup: The central cup stores rain between waterings, so the soil around the roots needs only to stay barely moist, which suits low-maintenance gardens and pots.
Long-Lived Specimen: After many years each rosette sends up one tall, branched flower spike and then slowly declines, leaving a few offsets at most, so it is best treated as a long-term single feature.
Ideal Applications
Sculptural Focal Point: Placed in gravel or low groundcover, one rosette gives a tropical garden a fixed point that holds its shape in every season.
Statement Pots: Set alone in a heavy, broad-based pot, the vase form is seen in full and the plant stays steady in wind once its cup is full.
Beside Water: Smooth leaf edges and very little litter make it a clean choice at the edge of a pool, pond or paved terrace.
Tropical Layering: Grouped with palms, cordylines and dark-leaved shrubs, its silver and plum tones lift a layered subtropical scheme.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn in frost-free districts
Soil & Drainage: A coarse, open bromeliad mix in pots, or raised, gritty free-draining soil in the garden; never heavy, wet ground
Establishment Care: Keep the central cup topped up and flush it with fresh water every week in warm weather so it stays clean and free of mosquito larvae, letting the soil dry between waterings. Feed sparingly and avoid copper-based sprays, which bromeliads do not tolerate. If it has been grown under shade, bring it into full sun by degrees over a few weeks, and give it overhead shelter where frost occurs, since frost marks the leaves.
