Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Common Juniper - Juniperus communis
Juniperus communis has the widest natural range of any conifer, running right across the cool northern hemisphere, and that breadth shows in how variable and how tough it is. Plants form an upright to spreading shrub of stiff, needle-sharp foliage, each needle marked with a pale band on the upper surface, and mature plants carry the blue-black berry-like cones used to flavour gin. It is planted in Australia for cold, dry, poor sites where more refined conifers will not persist.
Why Common Juniper
Cold hardiness: Unfazed by hard frost and snow, making it genuinely useful in alpine and tableland gardens.
Poor soil tolerance: Grows on thin, rocky, alkaline ground where topsoil is minimal.
Aromatic foliage: Sharp needles release a resinous scent when brushed or clipped.
Berry cones: Female plants carry green cones that ripen to blue-black over two to three years.
Longevity: Slow-growing and very long lived, so a planting holds its character for decades.
Ideal Applications
Cool-climate rockeries: Suits exposed, stony beds in the highlands and cool inland districts.
Informal screening: Planted in a row it makes a prickly, unclipped barrier.
Windbreak edging: Copes with cold, dry wind on rural boundaries.
Heritage and cottage gardens: A traditional evergreen in cool-climate garden styles.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained, and tolerant of sandy, gravelly, alkaline and low-fertility soils. It will not cope with humid, poorly drained subtropical conditions, where root and foliage disease become a problem.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only in prolonged dry spells. Mulch with gravel or bark clear of the stem, and prune only lightly, since junipers do not reshoot readily from old bare wood.
