Overview & Specifications

Hetzii Juniper (Topiary) - Juniperus x media ‘Hetzii’
Trained as topiary, ‘Hetzii’ stops being the wide spreading shrub of car parks and becomes a tight blue-grey column, cone or spiral on a clean stem. Juniperus x media ‘Hetzii’ suits this work because its foliage is fine, dense and slow enough to hold a crisp edge between clips, and it does it in heat, wind and poor soil that would defeat a buxus or a conifer needing cool moist ground. Choose it where formal structure is wanted but irrigation will be limited.
Why Hetzii Juniper
Holds a Clipped Line: Fine scale foliage on dense twiggy growth takes shears cleanly and stays sharp for months.
Blue-Grey Colour: The soft steel tone sits well against rendered walls, limestone and silver-foliage plantings.
Hardy Both Ways: It tolerates real frost and searing summer heat, which few formal evergreens manage together.
Poor Soil Tolerance: It performs in shallow, rocky, alkaline and sandy soils, including coastal sites with salt wind.
Prune With Care: Junipers do not reshoot from bare inner wood, so keep every cut in green growth and never cut back past the foliage.
Ideal Applications
Formal Entry Pairs: Matched specimens flanking a door or gate give immediate symmetry.
Driveway Rhythm: Repeated at even spacing they mark a long drive without blocking sightlines.
Feature Pots: Large urns on a terrace suit a shape that holds its outline year round.
Low Water Formal Gardens: Gives Mediterranean or classical structure to a garden on restricted irrigation.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1-1.5m for a clipped row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2-3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding the peak of summer
Soil & Drainage: Any free-draining soil, acid or alkaline. Waterlogging is the one thing that kills it, so mound the planting on clay and never place it at the low point of a bed.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week for the first season, then back off, as constant moisture invites root rot. Mulch with 50mm of bark held clear of the trunk, and clip lightly twice a year, in spring and again in late summer, to keep the trained shape crisp.
