Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Broad-Leaved Silverberry (Ball) - Elaeagnus macrophylla
Clipped into a ball, Elaeagnus macrophylla gives something very few formal shapes can: a silver sphere. The broad leaves are coated in fine metallic scales that read pale grey in sun and flash white underneath when wind turns them, and the plant tolerates salt, exposure and poor ground that would strip a buxus or a topiary olive. Autumn brings tiny cream flowers, barely visible but powerfully fragrant.
Why Broad-Leaved Silverberry
Silver Foliage: Scaled leaves hold a consistent metallic grey through every season, unlike deciduous silver plants.
Clipping Response: It reshoots freely, including from older wood, so a ball can be renovated rather than replaced.
Coastal Toughness: Salt laden wind and sandy limestone soils are no obstacle.
Autumn Perfume: Insignificant flowers throw a surprisingly strong sweet scent across a garden in April and May.
Wind Resistance: Thick leathery leaves do not tear or brown in exposed positions.
Ideal Applications
Repeated Balls: A rhythm of spheres along a path, driveway or terrace edge.
Entry Pots: A matched pair in containers either side of a door.
Coastal Structure: Formal shape in a seaside garden where box and yew fail.
Silver Hedge: Planted closer and clipped as a continuous low hedge instead of individual balls.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres for a run of balls, or 800mm for a continuous clipped hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding the hottest part of summer
Soil & Drainage: Almost any soil that drains, including sand, limestone and thin coastal ground. It will not sit in water.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle the rootball, then reduce sharply once it is away. Trim two or three times through the growing season, cutting back to just inside the intended profile each time so the sphere tightens rather than expands.
