Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Paragon Olive (Standard) - Olea europaea ‘Paragon’
A standard olive is a trained plant, not simply a tree in a pot, and that training is what you are buying. This Olea europaea has been grown on a single clear stem with a clipped rounded head, so it reads as architecture rather than shrubbery, and the grey-green foliage holds that geometry through drought, heat and salt wind. Paragon is an Australian-grown dual purpose selection, so the head will carry spring flower and a crop of small black fruit as well as foliage.
Why Paragon Olive Standard
Clear Stem: The bare trained trunk lifts the canopy above underplanting, keeping the base of the bed usable and visible.
Clipped Head: Dense small leaves take shearing cleanly, holding a tight ball or lollipop shape with two trims a year.
Silver Foliage: The grey-green leaf with its pale underside catches wind and light, softening hard modern materials.
Exposure Hardiness: Handles drought, reflected heat, salt air and coastal wind that would defoliate a clipped buxus or bay.
Fruit Set: Expect small black olives in autumn, so site away from pale paving if staining would be a nuisance.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Entrance Pairs: Matched standards either side of a doorway or gate give immediate symmetry and formality.
Courtyard Grid: Repeated on a regular grid in gravel or paving it creates a Mediterranean parterre effect.
Large Planters: The restrained root system tolerates permanent containers better than most trained trees.
Poolside Formal Planting: Salt and chlorine splash tolerance plus minimal leaf drop make it a practical pool surround choice.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m for a row of standards
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Any time except the peak of summer. Autumn is ideal.
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained soil, including limestone, sand and rocky ground. Waterlogged clay is the one thing that will kill an olive.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle the root ball, then taper to occasional deep soaks only. Clip the head twice a year, in late winter and again after the summer flush, and rub off any shoots that appear on the clear trunk before they thicken.
