Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Swan Hill Olive - Olea europaea ‘Swan Hill’
‘Swan Hill’ is the fruitless olive, an Australian selection of Olea europaea that flowers only sterile flowers and therefore sets no fruit at all. That single trait is why it dominates commercial and municipal planting: all of the silver grey foliage, gnarled character and drought hardiness of a classic olive, with none of the stained paving, no fruit drop and no self seeding into bushland. It also produces very little viable pollen, which matters in allergy sensitive settings.
Why Swan Hill
No Fruit: It is genuinely fruitless, so there is no staining of paths, driveways or pool surrounds.
No Weed Risk: Because it sets no seed, it cannot naturalise the way fruiting olives have in southern Australia.
Silver Grey Canopy: The classic olive foliage colour that anchors Mediterranean and contemporary schemes.
Extreme Drought Tolerance: Established trees survive on rainfall alone across most of southern Australia.
Long Lived and Sculptural: Trunks thicken and gnarl with age, improving the tree over decades.
Ideal Applications
Driveway Avenue: A repeated line of clean stemmed olives with no fruit to crush underfoot or under tyres.
Poolside and Paved Courtyards: The obvious choice where a fruiting olive would stain hard surfaces.
Clipped Hedge or Screen: Responds to shearing, forming a dense grey green wall at 2 to 4m.
Feature Specimen: Older trees with heavy trunks work as sculptural focal points in gravel courtyards.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, avoiding heavy frost and peak summer
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil is essential, tolerates alkaline, rocky and poor ground, will fail in waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer and fortnightly in the second, then reduce to occasional deep soaks only. Avoid rich feeding and heavy mulch against the trunk, and prune in late winter to open the canopy and set the framework you want long term.
