Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Spanish Queen Olive - Olea europaea ‘Spanish Queen’
‘Spanish Queen’ is a table olive variety, grown for large fleshy green fruit rather than oil, and it makes a broad, silvery, thoroughly Mediterranean tree in the process. Olea europaea is one of the most heat and drought resilient trees available in Australia, holding grey green foliage with silver undersides through summers that flatten softer exotics. Owners choose it when they want a tree that looks handsome year round and produces something worth curing at the end of it.
Why Spanish Queen Olive
Large table fruit: Big fleshy green olives with a high flesh to stone ratio, suited to brining rather than pressing.
Silver canopy: The two tone grey green leaf gives a soft shimmering canopy that suits rendered and stone architecture.
Heat and drought hardiness: Established trees survive long dry summers and reflected heat with minimal water.
Alkaline soil tolerance: Handles limestone influenced and alkaline soils that trouble most fruit trees.
Long life and shapeability: Olives reshoot from old wood, so they can be pruned hard, lifted, or held at a set size for decades.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Mediterranean courtyard: A single multi branched tree in gravel or paving is the signature planting of the style.
Productive avenue: A row along a driveway gives shade, silver colour and a genuine harvest.
Hot exposed frontage: Suits west facing gardens and reflected heat sites where other trees struggle.
Large containers: Tolerates root restriction well and can be held at 2 to 3m in a substantial pot.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a dense grove or informal screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; autumn planting suits winter rainfall districts best
Soil & Drainage: Free draining above all else, from sand to gravelly loam, alkaline or neutral; olives decline quickly in heavy waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers, deeply and infrequently to drive roots down. Mulch away from the trunk, feed in early spring, and plant another olive variety nearby if a heavy crop matters, since large fruited table types set best with cross pollination.
