Olivia Olive - Olea europaea ‘Olivia’
An olive earns its keep in an Australian garden twice over: the silver-grey foliage never stops working, and the gnarled trunk that develops with age gives a maturity few other trees deliver. Olea europaea is built for the Mediterranean-type climate that much of southern Australia shares, tolerating heat, drought, wind, salt and thin alkaline soils without complaint. ‘Olivia’ is grown as a fruiting selection, and like all olives it can be left to grow into a small tree or clipped hard into a formal shape.
Why Olivia Olive
Silver foliage: Narrow grey-green leaves with silver undersides shimmer in wind and stay through winter.
Drought hardiness: Deep rooting means it survives long dry periods on rainfall alone once established.
Character with age: The trunk thickens and furrows over the years, giving genuine specimen presence.
Pruning tolerance: Accepts heavy pruning and shaping, including topiary and standard forms.
Coastal and alkaline tolerance: Handles salt wind, limestone soils and reflected heat that defeat most trees.
Ideal Applications
Mediterranean-style gardens: The defining tree of gravel, rosemary and lavender plantings.
Driveway and avenue planting: Evenly spaced olives give a formal approach with minimal water demand.
Large pots and courtyards: Tolerates root restriction better than most trees of its size.
Windbreak and boundary planting: Dense evergreen growth on exposed dry sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m for a dense screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring; avoid the peak of summer
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil of almost any type, including poor, rocky and alkaline ground. The one intolerance is heavy soil that stays wet, which causes root rot.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers to establish deep roots, then very little afterwards. Mulch to suppress weeds, prune in late winter to open the canopy, and be aware that in some districts olive seedlings can spread from dropped fruit, so pick up windfall in bushland-adjacent gardens.
