Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Olive (Standard) - Olea europaea
Clipped as a standard, the olive gives a garden the silver grey Mediterranean note without the sprawl of a full sized fruiting tree. A clear trunk carries a rounded, densely trimmed head of narrow leaves that are grey green above and silver beneath, so the plant catches wind and light in a way dark leafed topiary cannot. Olea europaea is also genuinely tough: it takes heat, drought, salt wind and alkaline soil, provided the drainage is honest.
Why an Olive Standard
Silver Foliage: The two toned leaf shimmers in wind and lifts dark paving, render and stonework.
Drought Hardiness: Once established it needs very little water, making it a sound choice for low water gardens and exposed courtyards.
Holds a Clipped Shape: Fine growth responds well to shears and the head stays tight with one or two trims a year.
Coastal and Alkaline Tolerance: Salt wind, limestone soils and reflected heat are all handled without fuss.
Fruit Consideration: Olives ripen black and can stain paving, so it is worth siting containers and standards with that in mind or removing fruit while small.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Entry Pair: Two matched standards either side of a door or gate give immediate formality and Mediterranean character.
Terrace and Courtyard Pots: One of the most reliable trees for large containers in hot, dry, sunny positions.
Formal Allee: Repeated down a path or driveway above low clipped hedging for a strong rhythmic line.
Low Water Gardens: Anchors gravel and drought tolerant plantings where irrigation is limited.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging form; repeat at 2m to 3m for a rhythmic line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring; avoid planting into cold wet winter soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is the single non negotiable requirement; it tolerates poor, rocky and alkaline soils but not waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply but infrequently through the first two summers so roots go looking for moisture rather than sitting near the surface. Keep the stake in place until the trunk is firm, mulch with gravel or coarse organic mulch clear of the trunk, and trim the head after the main spring growth flush.
