Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coastal Rosemary - Westringia fruticosa
Westringia is the workhorse of Australian coastal gardens: it clips like box, survives salt wind that kills most shrubs, and flowers on and off all year. Westringia fruticosa grows naturally on exposed sandstone headlands in New South Wales, which tells you most of what you need to know about its drainage and water preferences. Kept tip pruned, the grey green whorled foliage stays dense right to the ground.
Why Coastal Rosemary
Hedging: Fine foliage and tight branching take shearing into formal hedges, balls and low borders.
Coastal Tolerance: Handles direct salt exposure, wind and sandy soils without protection.
Long Flowering: Small white flowers appear through most of the year with a strong flush in spring.
Water Thrift: Once established it needs almost no supplementary watering, even through a dry summer.
Habitat Value: An Australian native that provides shelter for small birds and nectar for native insects.
Ideal Applications
Clipped low hedge: A native alternative to box for edging paths and beds.
Coastal mass planting: Grouped across a bank or foredune garden it forms a continuous grey green cover.
Dry garden bed: Combines well with grevillea, correa, lomandra and gravel mulch.
Verge and roadside: Tough enough for hot, poor, unirrigated strips of ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6-0.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2-1.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential, with sandy or gravelly soils suiting best, and rich, wet or heavily fertilised ground to be avoided
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first three months, then taper off quickly so the plant hardens. Tip prune lightly after planting and again after each flush to build density from the base rather than letting the plant go leggy.
