Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Spanish Bayonet - Yucca aloifolia
The name is a warning as much as a description. Yucca aloifolia carries stiff, dark green, sword shaped leaves that end in a genuine needle point, arranged in tight spirals up a woody trunk that branches with age into a candelabra. It is one of the toughest architectural plants available, thriving on sand, salt spray and neglect, and it flowers in summer with a heavy upright panicle of waxy cream white bells. Site it deliberately: this is not a plant to put beside a narrow path.
Why Spanish Bayonet
Dagger Tipped Leaves: Rigid leaves with sharp terminal spines make it an effective and permanent deterrent planting.
Branching Trunks: With age it forms multiple heads on woody stems, giving a sculptural candelabra outline.
Coastal Hardiness: It handles salt laden wind and pure sand better than almost any other feature plant.
Summer Flower Spike: Dense upright panicles of cream white bells rise above the foliage through the warm months.
Minimal Water: Once rooted it needs essentially no supplementary irrigation across most of Australia.
Ideal Applications
Coastal front garden: Exposed dune style planting is where it looks and performs best.
Arid and gravel beds: It groups naturally with agave, aloe, euphorbia and ornamental grasses.
Security boundary planting: A row beneath windows or along a fence line is a serious physical barrier.
Large containers: It tolerates the restricted root run and drying conditions of a big pot without complaint.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2m to 1.8m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through to autumn
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, gravelly or rocky soil with very sharp drainage. It will rot at the base in heavy clay that stays wet through winter, so mound or raise the planting position in those soils.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer only, then let rainfall take over completely. Use a gravel mulch instead of organic material against the stem, and set the plant well back from paths, driveways and areas used by children because of the leaf tips.
