Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Variegated Spineless Yucca - Yucca elephantipes ‘Variegata’
The variegated form of Yucca elephantipes builds a swollen, elephant-footed base and branches into several thick trunks, each topped with a rosette of soft-tipped leaves edged in cream. Unlike most yuccas it carries no needle spines, so it can sit beside a path, a pool fence or an entry where an agave or Yucca aloifolia would be a hazard. It holds that architectural shape for decades on almost no water and no attention.
Why Variegated Spineless Yucca
Spineless Foliage: Leaf tips are blunt and pliable, which is why this is the yucca specified for poolside and pedestrian areas.
Cream Variegation: Broad butter-cream margins lift the plant against dark rendered walls and grey stone far better than the plain green form.
Water Thrift: Once the root plate is established it survives long dry spells on rainfall alone in most Australian capitals.
Multi-Trunk Structure: Mature plants branch into two or more heads, giving a candelabra outline that suits contemporary planting.
Contained Roots: The root system is fibrous and non-aggressive, so it can be planted close to paving and raised planters.
Ideal Applications
Poolside Planting: Soft leaf tips and low leaf litter make it one of the safest bold-form plants around water.
Courtyard Feature: A single multi-headed specimen carries a small paved courtyard on its own.
Coastal Gardens: Salt-laden wind and sandy soil suit it, provided drainage is sharp.
Large Containers: Slow root growth and drought tolerance make it a long-term planter or rooftop subject.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn in temperate areas, any frost-free period in the subtropics and tropics
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential. Sandy or gritty loam is ideal, alkaline and coastal sands are fine, and heavy clay that stays wet in winter will rot the base
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a fortnight through the first summer and then only in extended dry spells, as overwatering does far more damage than neglect. Keep a coarse gravel or bark mulch clear of the trunk base so the caudex stays dry.
