Cootamundra Wattle - Acacia baileyana
Cootamundra Wattle is the silver-blue wattle that lights up the middle of winter, smothering itself in golden globular flowers through July and August when almost nothing else is out. Acacia baileyana holds finely divided, frosted blue-grey bipinnate foliage all year on a spreading, gently weeping frame, and it grows fast enough to give a real screen in three seasons. Its natural range is a small pocket near Cootamundra in New South Wales, though it has been planted across the country for well over a century.
Why Cootamundra Wattle
Silver Blue Foliage: The frosted ferny leaf is a year round feature in its own right, independent of flowering.
Mid Winter Gold: Flowers in the depths of winter, filling the gap when temperate gardens have nothing to offer.
Rapid Screen: Reaches useful screening height faster than almost any other ornamental native.
Drought And Frost Hardy: Handles hard frost and long dry periods once its roots are down.
Nitrogen Fixing: Improves poor soil for surrounding plantings as it grows.
Ideal Applications
Fast Temporary Screen: Used as a nurse plant while slower long term screening establishes behind it.
Winter Colour: Anchors a native border with a reliable July to August display.
Dry Bank Planting: Roots quickly on steep dry batters and helps hold soil.
Habitat: The dense foliage and heavy pollen support small birds and native insects through winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of low to moderate fertility. Avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers and manures, and never plant it where water sits in winter.
Establishment Care: Water through the first summer only, then leave it dry, because a pampered wattle grows soft and blows over in the first real gale. Be aware that this species seeds prolifically and is a recognised environmental weed outside its natural range, so remove seedlings and think carefully before planting near bushland or waterways.
