Snow in Summer - Melaleuca linariifolia
For two or three weeks in early summer the canopy of Melaleuca linariifolia disappears under a fleece of white bottlebrush flowers, which is exactly how it earned its common name. Underneath the display sits one of the most forgiving small trees in Australian cultivation, coping with heavy clay, periodic waterlogging and long dry spells with equal indifference, all carried on papery white bark. Designers choose it where a paperbark character is wanted but the site is too tight for the broad heads of the swamp paperbarks.
Why Snow in Summer
Summer Display: Dense white flower spikes smother the outer canopy from late November into December, heavy enough to look like snowfall from the street.
Papery Bark: The trunk builds layers of soft, cream to white papery bark that peel in sheets and give winter interest once flowering finishes.
Wet or Dry: It grows naturally along creek flats and swamp margins, so it handles a boggy winter corner, yet established trees also ride out summer drought.
Fine Canopy: The needle fine leaves cast light dappled shade rather than dense gloom, so lawn and understorey planting still work beneath it.
Wildlife Value: Honeyeaters, native bees and lorikeets work the flowers heavily during the flush.
Ideal Applications
Street and Verge Planting: A reliable small street tree in coastal councils, tolerant of compaction, reflected heat and salt laden wind.
Informal Screen: Planted in a row it forms a soft evergreen barrier without the hard wall look of a clipped hedge.
Damp Corners and Rain Gardens: One of the few ornamental trees that will sit happily in a low spot that stays wet after storms.
Courtyard Shade: Its modest root system and light canopy suit paved courtyards and pool surrounds better than most eucalypts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in temperate districts, any time of year in frost free coastal areas
Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable across clay, loam and sand, tolerating both seasonal inundation and extended dry periods, though best growth comes on a moisture retentive loam
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, tapering off once new growth extends past the original rootball. Keep a 75mm mulch layer out to the drip line and pulled back from the trunk, and resist heavy pruning in year one so the tree can build its canopy.
