Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Black Tea Tree - Melaleuca bracteata
Melaleuca bracteata is the species behind the popular golden foliage cultivars, and in its straight green form it is a genuinely useful hard working tree: fine, dark, aromatic foliage on a densely branched frame, with dark furrowed bark that gives the common name. It grows across inland eastern Australia along watercourses, so it copes with periodic flooding, extended drought and frost with equal indifference. Where a screen or windbreak has to survive a difficult site with no ongoing care, this is the safe specification.
Why Black Tea Tree
Foliage Texture: Very fine, needle like dark green leaves give a soft feathery mass and a strong scent when crushed.
Site Range: It handles waterlogged creek flats, dry inland paddocks and frost pockets alike.
Screening Density: Branching starts low and stays dense, so it blocks sightlines to ground level.
Flowering: Small white to cream bottlebrush flowers appear through spring and summer and feed native bees.
Bark Character: Older trunks develop dark, deeply furrowed bark that contrasts against the fine foliage.
Ideal Applications
Rural windbreak: Planted in rows to filter hot dry winds across paddocks and homestead surrounds.
Dense privacy screen: A close planted line makes a soft textured, non formal green wall.
Creek and drainage line stabilisation: Suited to banks and low points subject to periodic inundation.
Habitat and revegetation: Widely used in inland riparian restoration for its toughness and bee value.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in most districts; spring in cold inland areas
Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable across clay, loam and sand; tolerates both seasonal waterlogging and long dry periods
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first three months and then only through extended dry, as it becomes self sufficient fast. Mulch to 75mm, use a low phosphorus native fertiliser in spring if growth is slow, and tip prune young plants to thicken the base of a screen.
