Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Mulberry - Morus alba
The white mulberry is one of the fastest, toughest shade trees available for an Australian backyard, and it fruits heavily into the bargain. Morus alba puts on a broad, densely leafy canopy quickly, drops it completely in winter to let sun into the house, and carries sweet berries through late spring and summer. It is also the tree grown for centuries as silkworm fodder, which is where the leafy vigour comes from.
Why White Mulberry
Growth Speed: It establishes and puts on canopy faster than almost any other fruiting shade tree in Australian conditions.
Seasonal Shade Control: A dense summer canopy and full winter leaf drop make it a genuine passive solar tree on the northern side of a house.
Heavy Cropping: Mature trees carry large quantities of sweet berries over several weeks in late spring and summer.
Climate Range: It handles frost, extended heat, dry spells and a wide range of soils, from Tasmania to inland Queensland.
Pruning Tolerance: It accepts hard pruning, so the mature size can be kept well below the tree's natural height if required.
Ideal Applications
Backyard Shade Tree: The classic large shade tree for a lawn or play area, with fruit as a bonus.
Edible Landscape: A productive canopy tree in an orchard or food garden where space allows.
Rural Windbreaks: Fast growing enough to establish a functional shelterbelt within a few years.
Livestock and Poultry Shade: Long used on rural blocks for shade with the additional benefit of dropped fruit and leaf.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m for a windbreak row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m so canopies do not crowd
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sand to improved clay, provided the site is not waterlogged; pH 5.5 to 7.5
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers to build a deep root system, then it will largely fend for itself. Site it carefully: the roots are strong and shallow, so keep it at least 8 to 10m from paving, drains and house footings, and note the fruit stains paving and attracts birds, so avoid planting directly over a driveway, path or entertaining area. It has naturalised in some districts, so keep plantings within managed gardens rather than near bushland or watercourses.
