Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Agave ‘Confederate Rose’
This is a garden selected Agave grown for the rosette itself rather than for any flower, with broad, stiff leaves arranged in the tight geometric spiral the genus is known for and rose tinting that develops on the leaf margins in cool, bright conditions. Colour intensity shifts with the season, so the plant looks different in July than it does in January. Like all agaves it asks for sharp drainage and almost nothing else.
Why Agave ‘Confederate Rose’
Architectural rosette: The symmetrical form holds its shape year round and photographs as hard landscape rather than planting.
Seasonal leaf colour: Rose and pink tones develop along the leaf margins in cool bright weather and soften again in summer.
Minimal water: Established plants survive on rainfall alone through most Australian summers.
Terminal spines: Leaf tips are sharp, so it belongs well back from paths, doorways and play areas.
Flowers once, then pups: The rosette dies after its single flowering, but offsets around the base carry the planting forward.
Ideal Applications
Gravel garden: It anchors a dry, unirrigated bed of succulents, grasses and stone.
Coastal exposure: Salt wind and sandy soil suit it, making it useful on hard coastal sites.
Entry pot feature: A single rosette in a wide bowl works as a sculptural entry statement.
Slopes and rockeries: Sharp drainage on a batter is precisely the condition it prefers.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a massed band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while the soil is warm and drying
Soil & Drainage: Gritty, sharply drained soil or a raised mound; winter wet around the crown is the only reliable way to kill it
Establishment Care: Water once every two to three weeks through the first warm season only, then leave it to rainfall. Mulch with gravel or coarse scoria rather than bark so moisture never sits against the lower leaves, and remove offsets if you want the parent rosette to stay clean and singular.
