Silver Plum Giant Bromeliad - Alcantarea imperialis ‘Silver Plum’
Where the red forms shout, this one works in metallics. Alcantarea imperialis ‘Silver Plum’ carries a silvery grey overlay across broad recurving leaves washed with plum and purple tones, so the rosette shifts appearance depending on the angle of light. It has the same architecture and the same undemanding rock dwelling habits as the rest of the species, with foliage that pairs more easily with grey stone, concrete and coastal planting than the burgundy selections do.
Why Silver Plum Giant Bromeliad
Metallic silver overlay: A fine powdery bloom across the leaves catches light and shifts with the viewing angle.
Plum undertones: Purple tones sit beneath the silver and strengthen in cooler months.
Substantial rosette: It builds to well over a metre across, holding its own against large leaved tropicals.
Little soil needed: The roots anchor rather than feed, so it grows in crevices, rubble or a coarse mix.
Handles heat and exposure: Thick leaves cope with reflected heat from paving and walls.
Ideal Applications
Contemporary courtyard: The silver tones sit well against concrete, corten and pale stone.
Coastal garden: It handles salt air and bright exposure in sheltered frost free coastal positions.
Large feature container: A single rosette in a wide bowl needs no companion planting.
Rock garden pocket: Wedged among boulders it grows exactly as it does on Brazilian outcrops.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Coarse bark, scoria and grit with sharp drainage; garden loam alone holds far too much moisture
Establishment Care: Keep water in the central cup rather than concentrating on the roots, and refresh it regularly so it stays clean. Avoid overhead fertiliser and hard water, both of which mark the silver bloom on the leaves, and protect it from frost through its first winters.
