Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Artichoke Agave - Agave parryi var. truncata
This is the tidiest of the large agaves. Agave parryi var. truncata forms a tight, near-spherical rosette of short, broad, chalky blue leaves tipped with a dark chocolate spine, and it stays compact enough to sit in a garden bed without swallowing its neighbours. Where Agave americana is a landscape-scale statement, this one is a detail plant, chosen for the precision of its form at close range.
Why Artichoke Agave
Compact form: The rosette rarely exceeds a metre across, so it suits courtyards and narrow beds where larger agaves cannot fit.
Leaf detail: Broad, blunt-tipped leaves carry dark terminal spines and imprinted bud marks from the leaves that folded over them.
Cold hardiness: Among the hardiest agaves, it copes with frost in inland and tableland gardens where softer succulents fail.
Symmetry: The rosette is unusually even, which is why it reads well in repeated or grid plantings.
Low input: No pruning, no feeding and effectively no irrigation once established.
Ideal Applications
Repeat feature planting: Set in a line or grid through gravel, the consistency of the rosettes carries the design.
Pot culture: Ideal in a wide bowl where the geometry can be seen from above.
Frost-prone dry gardens: Suits Adelaide Hills, central Victoria and the NSW tablelands where winter cold rules out tropical succulents.
Roof gardens and podium planters: Light water demand and shallow rooting suit constructed soil profiles.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a low continuous band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer into early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining gritty soil is essential. It tolerates poor, shallow and alkaline ground but not winter waterlogging.
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, roughly every ten to fourteen days over the first summer, and stop entirely through winter. Mulch with gravel and avoid mounding anything organic against the base of the leaves.
