Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Agave romanii
One of the less common Mexican agaves in Australian collections, grown for the symmetry of its rosette rather than for any single showy feature. Agave romanii forms a firm, evenly spaced whorl of thick grey-green leaves edged with dark teeth and finished with a stout terminal spine. It suits a buyer who already has the widely planted agaves and wants a rosette that is not on every second nature strip.
Why Agave romanii
Rosette Symmetry: The leaves sit in tight, regular ranks, which is what makes the plant work as a single specimen rather than in a group.
Armed Margins: Dark marginal teeth and a hard terminal spine give the leaf edge definition and keep foot traffic away.
Rarity: It is uncommon in the trade here, so it carries interest in a collection of succulents.
Medium Footprint: Expect a mid-sized rosette rather than the two-metre spread of the big century agaves.
Drought Hardiness: Established plants live on rainfall alone in Mediterranean and dry temperate parts of Australia.
Ideal Applications
Collector Specimen: Given its own space in a bowl or a gravel bed, the rosette geometry is the display.
Dry Rockery: Slots between boulders where drainage is naturally sharp and reflected warmth is high.
Low Maintenance Frontage: Works in unirrigated street-front beds where nothing else will hold shape.
Architectural Planting: Pairs with rendered walls, corten and pale gravel where hard geometry is wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not suited to hedging. Massed at 1 to 1.5m between plants.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m for a repeated rhythm along a wall or drive.
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, avoiding the cold wet months.
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is not negotiable. Sandy loam, gritty succulent mix or a raised mound on clay soils.
Establishment Care: Water sparingly and only when the soil has dried right through, roughly fortnightly over the first summer. Mulch with gravel or scoria and keep organic matter away from the crown, where it holds moisture and starts rot.
