Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rubra Giant Bromeliad - Alcantarea imperialis ‘Rubra’
Colour is the entire argument for this form. Alcantarea imperialis ‘Rubra’ holds deep wine red to burgundy foliage in a rosette that can reach a metre and a half across, and the pigment deepens the brighter the position. Grown well it functions as a permanent block of dark colour in a tropical planting, the sort of contrast usually chased with short lived annuals or cordylines that go leggy.
Why Rubra Giant Bromeliad
Deep burgundy foliage: Wine red colour holds all year and intensifies in strong light.
True scale: A mature rosette reads as a major landscape element, not a groundcover accent.
Rock dwelling roots: It anchors rather than feeds through its roots, so it thrives in almost no soil.
Towering inflorescence: The flower spike lifts 2 to 3m above the plant when it finally blooms.
Frost tender: Even light frost scars the leaves, so it needs a frost free position or overhead protection.
Ideal Applications
Colour contrast planting: Set against green palms and philodendrons it does the work of a feature wall.
Poolside statement: Clean, low litter and heat tolerant, it suits paved surrounds.
Raised planter: Elevating the rosette shows the form from below and guarantees drainage.
Rock and boulder garden: Tucked between stones it recreates the habitat it evolved in.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a massed group
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Very coarse, free draining mix of bark, gravel and scoria; never dense soil that stays wet at the crown
Establishment Care: Fill the central cup at planting and keep it topped up, flushing it every few weeks in still weather. Give the root zone only occasional water, and site it in strong light without harsh inland afternoon sun, since colour comes from light but the leaves will bleach in extremes.
