Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Song of India - Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of India’
‘Song of India’ is grown entirely for foliage: whorled, strap-shaped leaves edged in bright creamy yellow, arranged in dense rosettes along slender stems that lean and curve as they extend. Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of India’ builds into a multi-stemmed, sculptural shrub in frost free climates, and it holds that variegation in bright light without fading. Landscape designers use it where a hard-edged built space needs a light-coloured, architectural plant that will not outgrow its position quickly.
Why Song of India
Bright variegation: Creamy yellow leaf margins lift dark corners and read strongly against rendered walls and stone.
Sculptural stems: Multiple slender canes branch and curve with age, producing a shape closer to a small tree than a shrub.
Drought tolerance: Thick roots and firm leaves let it tolerate extended dry once established.
Indoor and outdoor use: One of the few landscape plants that transitions successfully into interior planting under bright light.
Slow growth: Stays in scale for years, which suits confined planters and courtyards.
Ideal Applications
Tropical courtyard: Planted in groups of odd numbers to build layered foliage colour in a frost free garden.
Raised planters: Grown in built planter boxes and rooftop pots where soil volume is limited.
Interior atrium: Used in large containers indoors near glazing, where its light requirements are met.
Foliage mass planting: Massed as a mid-height layer among cordylines, philodendrons and bromeliads.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m for a mass planted block
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer into warm soil, in frost free locations only
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or loamy soil, or a good quality free draining potting mix in containers. Wet, heavy soil causes stem and root rot
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first warm season, then only when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. Mulch lightly to 50mm, keep mulch off the stems and feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring, protecting the plant from any frost or cold drying wind.
