Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Giant Bromeliad - Alcantarea ‘Whyanbeel’ x imperialis ‘Purpurea’
A hybrid between two large growing Alcantarea selections, bred to combine size and vigour with purple leaf tone. Expect a broad rosette in the same class as the imperialis parent, with colour that varies from plant to plant as hybrid seedlings do, deepening in bright light and through cooler months. The cultural needs are identical to the parents: sharp drainage, water in the cup, and no frost.
Why This Hybrid Alcantarea
Hybrid vigour: Crosses in this group tend to establish and bulk up faster than either parent grown from seed.
Purple leaf tone: Foliage carries purple pigment overlaid on green, strongest where light is strong.
Large scale rosette: It builds to well over a metre across, functioning as a structural element rather than an accent.
Lithophytic habit: It grows on rock and rubble as readily as in a bed, needing anchorage more than soil.
Individual variation: Being a hybrid, colour and form differ slightly between plants, which suits informal groupings.
Ideal Applications
Tropical feature bed: A single specimen provides the focal point in a bed of green foliage plants.
Boulder and rock planting: It settles into crevices and rubble pockets with no soil preparation.
Elevated planter: Raised above eye level the rosette geometry reads clearly and drainage is guaranteed.
Sheltered courtyard: Warm, frost free and bright is exactly the microclimate it wants.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Coarse, sharply drained bromeliad mix or gravelly ground; standing moisture at the crown causes rot
Establishment Care: Water into the central cup at planting and keep it filled, flushing it periodically rather than letting it stagnate. Water the root zone sparingly, feed only with a very dilute liquid feed if at all, and keep the plant clear of frost.
