Fan Aloe - Aloe plicatilis
The Fan Aloe is the aloe that becomes a tree. Grey forked branches divide again and again, each one ending in a flat fan of strap-shaped blue-green leaves arranged in a single plane, and over decades the plant builds a thick corky trunk. Aloe plicatilis comes from a small area of mountain fynbos in the Western Cape of South Africa, a winter-rainfall Mediterranean climate, so it performs best in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne and struggles with humid subtropical summers. Large specimens are among the most valuable succulents in cultivation and are bought as the centrepiece of a garden, not as filler.
Why Fan Aloe
Branching Structure: Repeated forking creates a miniature tree form unlike any other aloe.
Fan Leaves: Leaves sit in one flat plane at each branch tip, an arrangement found in very few plants.
Corky Bark: Thick grey fire-adapted bark gives an aged, sculptural trunk on mature plants.
Winter Flowers: Orange-red tubular blooms on upright stems from late winter into spring.
Slow and Long Lived: A specimen keeps improving for decades rather than peaking and declining.
Ideal Applications
Garden Centrepiece: A mature multi-branched plant placed where it is seen from every angle.
Mediterranean Dry Garden: Sits naturally with proteas, restios and other Cape and Australian dry-climate plants.
Elevated Feature: Planted in a raised bed or on a rock outcrop, which improves drainage and display.
Large Container: Grown in a wide pot in humid districts where the root zone can be kept drier.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In group plantings allow 2 to 3m between plants.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m as repeated specimens.
Best Planting Season: Autumn to spring in Mediterranean climates, avoiding hot dry mid summer.
Soil & Drainage: Gritty, rocky, sharply drained soil that stays dry through summer. Humid, wet summers are its main enemy, so raise the planting position and never irrigate heavily in warm weather.
Establishment Care: Water lightly through the first cool season to settle roots, then leave it to winter rainfall. Mulch with gravel or rock, keep it clear of the trunk, and stake large branched specimens until the root plate anchors, since a top-heavy plant will rock in wind and break roots.
