Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Anthurium salvinii
Forget the small flowering anthuriums sold as indoor colour. Anthurium salvinii is a bird's nest type, building a stiff upright funnel of long leathery leaves that can approach a metre each, arranged in a rosette that collects leaf litter in the wild. It is grown entirely for that form and for the way it performs in genuinely deep shade, filling positions beneath palms and dense canopy where most large leaved plants thin out and collapse.
Why Anthurium salvinii
Nest forming rosette: Leaves radiate from a central point to create an upright vase shaped structure.
Leathery durable foliage: The thick leaves resist tearing in wind far better than soft tropical foliage.
Deep shade performance: It holds form and colour in low light where most feature plants stretch and thin.
Humidity loving: It responds strongly to humid coastal and tropical conditions in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Frost tender: It requires a frost free position, or a protected courtyard microclimate further south.
Ideal Applications
Shaded courtyard: It gives structure to a walled courtyard that receives little direct sun.
Rainforest understorey: Massed beneath palms and canopy trees it forms a strong ground layer.
Atrium and lightwell: Consistent low light and shelter suit it better than most large foliage plants.
Poolside shade bed: Sturdy leaves and slow litter drop make it manageable near water.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a continuous understorey
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Any time in the tropics; the warmer months elsewhere
Soil & Drainage: Coarse, open, organic rich mix that drains immediately; it behaves half epiphytically and rots in dense wet soil
Establishment Care: Keep it evenly moist but never soggy, watering two or three times a week in warm weather and easing right off in winter. Mulch with chunky bark or leaf litter to hold humidity around the base, and remove old leaves at the base rather than cutting them partway.
